Around the time I hit 40, my overall state of being started deteriorating. Needless to say, after a lifetime of taking care of myself and being conscious of the connections linking physical health and emotional health, I was not pleased. Several different lifestyle factors were contributing to this downward trend, of course. (Looking back, it’s easy to group the lion’s share of them into one sinister category: stress.)
The medical industry was no help for me. Exercise wasn’t solving the myriad problems either. (Even though, without it, I know things could have gotten far more unpleasant than they did.) Even meditation wasn’t enough to pull me out of the dark place I fell into. I felt defeated. I felt sad. It sucked.
One day, after years of pain and frustration, I discovered I had a wheat allergy. Hooray! (This was long before it became trendy, mind you.) I thought, “All this damn trouble because of bread and pasta? Really!?” I had no other option. I was forced to change my habits. And, once again, NOT pleased.
Luckily for me, I was the owner and chef of a restaurant. Confidence in the kitchen and access to the tools required to swiftly change my diet were already part of my lifestyle. All the things I needed to redesign my daily routine and manage my own health and happiness were conveniently at my fingertips. Magically, a faint light appeared in that dark place within days. Then one morning, I woke up happy.
It has been twenty years since my journey to health and happiness of body, mind and spirit began. I’m still on it. Still practicing. And always will be. The negative habits I learned to transform years ago have now been swapped-out for better, more health conscious ones. The trade-in value has proven to be well worth the investment.
The years have also seen my faith in the sublime meditation of cooking for yourself and my faith in plants and whole foods get stronger and stronger. The power hidden in the roots of these two magical tools transformed my life and continues to do so. It has similar effect on countless other silent heroes journeying along the same path
One of the many beauties of this magic is that it rubs off on others. A person who wakes up one morning feeling better than the day before literally BECOMES happy. (Body, mind and spirit are CONNECTED, for a moment in time.) When this happens, not only the individual, but everyone in their proximity benefits in some small, beautiful way. We all share in the positive energy.
I am blessed with a wide circle of influence - my family, friends, colleagues and clients. I can cast a net and pull in a boatload of them who’ve never seen the inside of a gym, yet they have phenomenal physiques. I love them, of course. But, people like that drive me crazy. I can cast another net and pull in another boatload who are perpetually brimming with positivity. I love them, equally. But people like that drive me crazy, too. (Now, do I even need to mention the people that can eat ANYTHING they want with no ill-effects? Don’t even get me started.)
The point is this: What comes naturally to some - the rest of us can learn. And, the more we practice what we learn - the better we get at it. Negative effects of the combined stresses we all experience CAN be managed and overcome. Old habits that are keeping us from where we desire to be can be traded in for healthy ones. Lifestyles that stand in the way of health and happiness can be redesigned to welcome them.
Millions of people are designed to enjoy health and happiness. Millions of others like me had to learn the hard way. Health and happiness is waiting for us all, just the same. If you’re not happy today - you can start BECOMING happy today. If you’re interested in learning core life skills designed to help each of us make happy happen in your own world, I would love to share them with you.
